Breaking Jakarta Book News!

Announcing The Publication and Formal Launch of the Premier Edition of Jakarta, Jayakarta, Batavia, the newest and now only English language and general interest book available about the City of Jakarta, which was formerly and historically known as both Jayakarta and Batavia

Jakarta, Jayakarta, Batavia, a title which includes insightful text essays and more than 280 pages of historical and contemporary four-color graphics, will be launched in a “Jakarta Style” fashion on Wednesday, the 26th of March 2008, at a gala publication reception to be held in the atrium of The Bellagio Boutique Mall and Residence in Mega Kuningan. This book launch will also include a special exhibition of photographs from the book.

The invitation-only book launch will take place from 6 p.m. on March 26th, but will soon be followed by a three-week public showing of the photo exhibition which will be available for viewing daily from 1 to 21 April at The Bellagio.

The book itself was specially created by the Yayasan Bali Purnati (The Bali Purnati Center For The Arts) in cooperation with many local and well-known authors, artists and photographers to formally document and honor Indonesia’s remarkable City-Province of Jakarta.

This elegant volume, printed by Jakarta’s prestigious PT. Jayakarta Agung Offset printing company, is the fifth book in a special series of Indonesia-related titles that have been published by The Yayasan Bali Purnati. Previous titles in this series have included the books Ubud Is a Mood; Sanur, The Birthplace of Bali Style; Kuta and Kuta; and Jogja On My Mind.

Jakarta, Jayakarta, Batavia, was edited, directed and designed by Leonard Lueras, the publications director of The Yayasan Bali Purnati, and within its pages are Jakarta-related essays and chapters that were written by nine Indonesia-based authors, including Richard Bennett, Bruce Carpenter, Ahmad Fahmy, Adolf Heuken, David Jardine, Irfan Kortschak, John McBeth, Simon Pitchforth and Bartele Santema.

Lueras was the book’s principle photographer, but the book also includes supporting photographs that were shot by J. Adiguna, Emmo Italiaander, Irfan Kortschak, P.J. Leo, Alex Lumi, James Nachtwey, Dave Merriman, Jez O’Hare, Erik Prasetya, Bob Rose, Arief Suhardiman, Back Tohir, R. Berto Wedhatama and Ricky Yudhistra. The works of a number of prominent Jakarta artists – past and present -- are also featured throughout the book.

Chapters in the book document Jakarta’s origins, various episodes in the city’s history, the Betawi people, the city’s cultural climate, the gangs of Jakarta, and Jakarta today and tomorrow. Also included are special cameo essays about various social and environmental aspects of the city.

The book is a creative effort that was made possible due to the support of a number of prestigious local sponsors who endorsed this publishing concept. Among sponsors-patrons who backed this Premier Edition of Jakarta, Jayakarta, Batavia are The Jakarta Post, the Cafe Batavia, the Jakarta International School, PT. Multi Bintang, The Hotel Alila, The A.I.G. and AIA Insurance Companies, The Grand Hyatt Hotel, Philips Indonesia, PT. Jayakarta Agung Offset, Indomultimedia, Bin House, PT. About the Publisher: The Yayasan Bali Purnati (The Bali Purnati Center For The Arts) was founded in 1999 as an international non-profit cultural foundation dedicated to the preservation, promotion, presentation and creation of new directions in the performing, visual and design arts. It is also a media center devoted to the documentation, in words and pictures, of various traditional and contemporary artworks and general interest subjects.

This Bali foundation’s headquarters are on the outskirts of Batuan village, right at the place where the villages of Penataran and Lod Tunduh meet. It is a quiet locale, but one which has for long been renowned for its classical and contemporary music, dance, painting, woodcarving, stone sculpture and other cultural forms.

Purnati’s environmentally-conscious grounds and permanent structures include, among other amenities, a proper performing arts theatre, an exhibition pavilion, a service and communications center, traditional Balinese architecture, artworks from other Indonesian regions, workshop and office spaces, and comfortable housing and social facilities for Indonesian artists, foreign visiting artists and artists-in-residence.

Also part of the Bali Purnati environment are beautifully-landscaped gardens, private studios, a library, aesthetically-pleasing vantage points, and shelters conducive for work, study and innovative multi-media collaborations. This young foundation, which recently gained plaudits when it co-produced a theatre production called I La Galigo (which is presently touring the world), will continuously operate as an international, multi-disciplinary center for the creation and development of new work in the arts.
